According to several recent studies, there are more than six million expats in Spain, nearly 15% of the population. Historically, Spain has been at the cross-roads of great migrations and its popularity as a modern tourism hub makes it one of the best holiday destinations in the world.
After an unforgettable vacation in Spain, tourists dream of living here permanently and indeed many of them actually do move. Spain is seen as one of the top retirement-destinations in the world. Many people move to work, raise families etc.
However, burning your boats and pulling up roots, traveling to Spain and settling down there is quite different from what you experience as a tourist. To avoid such a traumatic experience, keep these important points in mind:
Introspect: Escaping personal problems, relationship issues, financial crises, frustration with one's job, ill-health etc are common reasons to leave the home-country but you could find yourself just as depressed after moving. Your expectations and reality may be two different things.
Financial issues: Currently, with Europe experiencing serious financial crises, Spain has its own share of issues. Unemployment rates are high, the exchange rate is very poor and the cost of living is quite high. So if you're a pensioner or a job-seeker, this may not really be the best choice. However, property prices are at an all-time low, so are rentals so this is a good time to consider purchasing something even if you're not actually moving immediately. Taking advantage of low rentals is great for tourists and long lets.
Location: You may have landed the deal of a life-time – a property that you've always dreamed of owning. But look at the other aspects too. If it's located too far away from urban centers, you could end up paying huge transportation costs. You'll also need to factor in some kind of social life, shopping access, medical facilities and even something as trivial as a beauty salon.
Health: Spain is famous for its year-round sunshine and many people move here to take advantage of the relatively clean and unpolluted air, fresh produce, sea-food, meats and other healthy products. However, the quality, price and availability of good health-care may be different from what you're used to. Insurance costs for yourself and your family may be prohibitive. Though Spain is the perfect retirement destination, there may be issues that seniors face in terms of preparing for serious or chronic health problems.
Social factors: Moving to a totally different culture, with different customs, traditions, language and expectations can be quite difficult, especially for older people, unless they are moving in a group where they have suitable friends and company. But it can take anyone, whatever the age, quite some time to be socially accepted in local communities and to feel at home in them. Homesickness is one of the biggest reasons why people choose to return.
So think before you ink!
